Bengaluru techie R N Chandan Kumar, 37, was shot dead in Toronto in a suspected targeted attack. Family seeks govt help to bring his body back
A 37-year-old tech professional from Bengaluru, R N Chandan Kumar, was fatally shot in Toronto, Canada, after unidentified assailants opened fire on him in the parking lot of Woodbine Shopping Centre. Kumar, originally from Thyamagondlu near Nelamangala, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and later died in hospital from life-threatening injuries.
Images from the scene reportedly showed a white SUV riddled with bullet holes and a shattered driver-side window. Canadian police have described the incident as a targeted attack, though the motive remains unclear.
Back in Karnataka, Kumar’s family suspects that jealousy over his active involvement in pro-Kannada events may have played a role. They have appealed to the government for assistance in bringing his body back to India. Local officials have already begun the necessary formalities.

Kumar’s parents revealed that he had been living and working in Canada for the past nine years. On the day of the incident, he had spoken to them about a prospective marriage. The family learned of his death only after receiving late-night international calls from people present at the scene.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs is expected to coordinate with Canadian authorities to facilitate the repatriation process. The tragic incident has sparked grief in his hometown and among the Kannada diaspora, highlighting concerns about the safety of expatriates abroad.
