  • GBA is considering opening Nandini Parlours in Indira Canteen spaces
  • Plan aims to make use of idle hours and raise revenue
  • Several canteens face closure, low income and poor maintenance

GBA is reviewing a proposal to open Nandini Parlours inside Indira Canteens to use idle hours and boost revenue.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is evaluating a major proposal that could reshape the functioning of Indira Canteens across the city. With several canteens closed and many struggling with poor maintenance and lower-than-expected income, officials are exploring new ways to revive the initiative.

GBA Chief Maheshwar Rao confirmed that a proposal has been submitted to start Nandini Parlours inside the canteen premises. He said that Indira Canteens operate only during scheduled meal times, morning, afternoon, and night, while the space remains unused for the rest of the day.

According to him, the idea emerged from the need to avoid wasting these long idle hours. Since the canteens stay shut between meals, the GBA believes that opening Nandini Parlours could keep the facilities active throughout the day. This would also help generate additional revenue by renting or leasing the space when it is otherwise closed.

Rao stated that the move would benefit the public as well, as Nandini products would be easily accessible in neighbourhoods where Indira Canteens already exist.

The proposal, which aims to revive underutilised canteen spaces and improve financial sustainability, is currently under detailed consideration by the GBA.
