BIAL delays overstay fees at Bengaluru airport amid IndiGo flight disruptions. Vehicles get 8 mins free, charges after, towing beyond 18 mins
Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has postponed the rollout of its new lane segregation and overstay fee system at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) by a few days. The measures, initially scheduled to begin on Monday, will now be introduced later this week once flight operations across the country stabilize.
The new system is designed to streamline passenger pick‑ups at the arrival kerbsides of Terminals 1 and 2. Under the plan, vehicles will be allowed eight minutes of free access to the pick‑up zone. Beyond this, charges will apply: ₹150 for stays between eight and 13 minutes, ₹300 for 13 to 18 minutes, and towing for vehicles exceeding 18 minutes, with fines and towing costs levied at the nearest police station.

BIAL has emphasized that the initiative aims to reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance the overall landside experience for passengers and visitors. The revised effective date for implementation will be communicated shortly.
The deferment comes at a time when flight disruptions are affecting travel nationwide. IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has been cancelling flights for seven consecutive days. On Monday alone, 127 flights were cancelled at KIA, including 65 arrivals and 62 departures. Just two days earlier, cancellations peaked at 151 flights.
By delaying the introduction of overstay charges, airport authorities hope to ease pressure on passengers already dealing with widespread travel uncertainty. Once implemented, the system is expected to bring greater discipline and efficiency to one of India’s busiest airports
