Naming mismatches along Bengaluru’s Yellow Line have triggered commuter inconvenience and local protests, with strong demands to rename the Bommanahalli station as Roopena Agrahara-Bommanahalli.
Confusion over station names on Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line has snowballed into a major commuter issue, with residents accusing BMRCL of misnaming multiple stations and creating daily hardship for passengers. The controversy is most intense around the Bommanahalli station, where locals are now demanding an official name change.
Residents are pressing for the station to be renamed “Roopena Agrahara-Bommanahalli”, arguing that the current naming misleads passengers. The metro station has been constructed in Roopena Agrahara, but carries the Bommanahalli name, even though the two localities are nearly one kilometre apart. Locals have warned that if the additional name is not included, they will launch an indefinite hunger protest.

The problem is compounded by the fact that Bommanahalli already has another metro station, which has been named Hongasandra. This has left commuters confused, especially those unfamiliar with the area. Many passengers alighting at the “Bommanahalli” station realise only after exiting that they are actually in Roopena Agrahara. To reach Bommanahalli, they are forced to take autos or walk long distances, with several commuters complaining of high auto fares, pushing many to travel on foot.

Bommanahalli is not the only trouble spot. The Yellow Line has seen naming confusion across four stations, according to residents. Stations have allegedly been named in reverse, worsening the situation. Similar issues have surfaced at Electronic City and Konappana Agrahara. A station built in Electronic City has been named Konappana Agrahara, while the station located in Konappana Agrahara has been named Electronic City, creating widespread misunderstanding among daily passengers.

The Yellow Line, which runs from R V Road to Bommasandra, began operations in August and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While the line is expected to significantly improve connectivity in south Bengaluru, station naming errors have overshadowed its launch benefits.
With commuters, residents, and daily office-goers raising concerns, pressure is mounting on BMRCL to correct the station names and bring clarity before the confusion deepens further.
