The Ministry of Civil Aviation has initiated nationwide inspections at major airports after days of passenger chaos triggered by widespread disruptions in IndiGo flights. As part of the exercise, a high-level team led by IRS officer Sankesh Mehta, Director in the ministry, visited Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Devanahalli on Tuesday.

The team met airport authorities at Terminal 1, examining the measures implemented to ease passenger movement and restore normal operations. Officials inspected the IndiGo counters, departure gates, queuing system and passenger flow to assess how the airport and the airline handled the surge in delays.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, Mehta said the government has deployed senior officers to major airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru to ensure that passengers are not made to suffer as operations stabilise.

He said the inspection teams were specifically checking whether essential facilities, food arrangements, seating, support for senior citizens, families with children and pregnant women, as well as hygiene and queue management, were being provided during the ongoing recovery phase.

Mehta confirmed that the situation at Bengaluru Airport has “largely stabilised” and is moving toward 100% normalcy. He added that baggage-handling systems are also being closely monitored to prevent further inconvenience.

The aviation ministry, he said, has conveyed a clear message to IndiGo, directing the airline to prioritise passenger convenience and ensure disruptions are not repeated.

With operations gradually returning to normal nationwide, the Central teams will continue inspections to ensure airlines and airports strictly maintain passenger-service standards.
