With a new loop inaugurated and more projects in the pipeline, the state government pushes for long-term solutions at one of Bengaluru’s busiest traffic choke points.
The Karnataka government has unveiled a new decongestion blueprint for Hebbal Junction, one of Bengaluru’s most notorious traffic bottlenecks. The plan includes a 1.5-km tunnel road between Esteem Mall and Baptist Hospital, to be built by Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Ltd (B.SMILE), and a new flyover from KR Puram towards Kempegowda International Airport, proposed by the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA).

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar reviewed the proposals on Monday, shortly after inaugurating a new loop at the Hebbal flyover.
“The new loop has been built at a cost of Rs 80 crore. Another loop, connecting Esteem Mall to Mehkri Circle, will be ready by November. Together, these loops cost Rs 300 crore and expand the junction from two lanes to six,” Shivakumar told reporters.

Officials clarified that the planned 1.5-km tunnel is separate from the 16.5-km tolled tunnel project and is aimed at helping local commuters cross Hebbal Junction without being forced to use the tolled route.
When asked whether the additional flyover lanes would create congestion at Mehkri Circle, the Deputy CM responded briefly, “I can’t respond to everything that is said.”
