A daring, well-planned robbery shakes the tech capital as a CMS cash van is intercepted, staff are misled and threatened, and crores are stolen in minutes.
Bengaluru witnessed a shocking daylight robbery on Wednesday when a CMS cash replenishment vehicle carrying ₹7.11 crore was intercepted and looted by a gang travelling in an Innova car. The incident occurred shortly after the vehicle left the HDFC Bank in JP Nagar, where cash had been withdrawn for ATM distribution across the city.
According to the FIR filed at Siddapur Police Station by Vinod Chandra (alias Chandrashekarayya), Branch Manager of CMS HBR Layout, four staff members, custodian Aftab, driver Binod, and gunmen Rajanna and Tammayya, had drawn cash at 12:24 pm and were travelling via Ashoka Pillar-Siddapur Gate route.

The criminals, believed to be 6-7 men, tailing the CMS van in an Innova, intercepted it and introduced themselves as central tax/RBI officials, claiming they needed to “verify documents.” They forced Aftab, Rajanna and Tammayya into their vehicle and instructed driver Binod to follow.
The abducted staff were later dropped near Dairy Circle flyover, where the gang allegedly pointed a pistol at them to prevent resistance. They then escaped with the entire ₹7.11 crore, fleeing along the flyover before disappearing. Critically, the robbers also took away the vehicle’s CCTV DVR, erasing internal visual evidence.
Soon after receiving information, CMS managers tracked the van’s GPS, confirming its location near Dairy Circle. Police immediately initiated checks and alerted control rooms.

The scale of the heist has pushed Bengaluru Police into emergency mode. Police Commissioner S. Girish Kumar Singh personally questioned G.T. Nayak, CMS South India Head and retired IPS officer, to understand protocol lapses. Meanwhile, Home Minister held a high-level review at Vidhana Soudha, directing officers to crack the case within 24 hours and warning of strict action.
Over 150 CCTV footages have been examined, and all routes leading towards Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have been placed under intense surveillance with nakabandi checkpoints. Investigators are also probing a possible internal involvement, given the precision of the execution.
The stolen-vehicle was later towed to Siddapur Police Station after mahazar procedures.
