Karnataka Govt allows Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium to host IPL & international matches, with RCB funding ₹4.5 crore AI surveillance for fan safety

Bengaluru’s iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has received official clearance from the Karnataka Government to host international fixtures and Indian Premier League (IPL) matches once again. The Home Department granted permission to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), marking a significant step in reviving cricket at the venue.

Vinay Mruthyunjaya, spokesperson for KSCA, confirmed the development, stating that the association is “pleased to inform” that the government has approved hosting rights, subject to strict compliance with prescribed safety and security conditions. KSCA has already submitted a detailed roadmap to the Expert Review Committee and assured full adherence to crowd-management and security protocols.

The clearance comes after a suspension of matches at the stadium since June last year, following a tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL title celebration, which claimed 11 lives and left several injured. The incident had raised serious concerns about crowd safety and venue preparedness, prompting authorities to halt cricketing activities until corrective measures were put in place.

In response, RCB has proposed a major technological upgrade to enhance stadium security. The franchise plans to install 300 to 350 AI-powered surveillance cameras across the venue. This advanced system will allow KSCA and law enforcement agencies to monitor crowd movement, enforce disciplined queueing, and detect unauthorized access in real time. The AI-enabled analytics will also provide early alerts for incidents such as violence or intrusion, enabling swift intervention.

The initiative, estimated to cost around ₹4.5 crore, will be fully funded by RCB as a one-time investment. The technology integrates video, audio, and text analysis to accelerate investigations and improve decision-making during high-pressure situations.

Officials believe that the adoption of AI-driven surveillance will set new benchmarks in stadium crowd management and ensure a safer, more seamless matchday experience for fans. With compliance measures in place and advanced monitoring systems ready to be deployed, Bengaluru’s cricketing hub is poised to welcome back international teams and IPL action in 2026.
