Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar says the Sancharayuktha Project will ease Bengaluru traffic, with a new buffer road built along stormwater drains and lake zones, restricting heavy vehicles and cutting travel distance significantly.

Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Monday reviewed the progress of the Sancharayuktha Project and announced that the 5.50-km buffer road connecting Koramangala to Sarjapur Road will be completed by March 2026.

The project has been designed to tackle Bengaluru’s growing traffic congestion by expanding the city’s road network through the use of buffer zones along stormwater drains and lakes. Officials said this approach allows new roads to be created without disturbing existing residential areas.

The project is being implemented by B-SMILE, a Special Purpose Vehicle, which has estimated the potential to develop a total of 310 km of roads across the city. Of this, about 90 km falls within the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) limits.

As part of the pilot phase, B-SMILE has taken up construction of a 5.50-km stretch between the Inner Ring Road in Koramangala and Iblur Junction on Sarjapur Road. After inspecting the works, Mr. Shivakumar said the larger plan is to develop a continuous 10-km road from M.G. Road to Bellandur.

He revealed that land required for a key portion of this stretch has been provided by the Army. “We had requested Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to release the land, and permission has been granted. Once completed, commuters will not need to go around the military area, saving nearly 10 km of travel,” he said.

The Deputy CM clarified that heavy vehicles such as buses and lorries will not be allowed on these buffer roads. Only pedestrians, two-wheelers and cars will be permitted to use them.

In the first phase, similar works are underway in areas such as Rajarajeshwari Nagar, ITPL and other parts of the city. He also stated that no building construction will be permitted in buffer zones, and landowners affected by the project are being compensated through Transferable Development Rights (TDR).
