MG Road to undergo first major pipeline overhaul in 40 yrs; BWSSB to replace ageing lines before ₹45‑cr road upgrade, traffic disruption expected
For the first time in nearly four decades, MG Road is set for extensive underground work as the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) prepares to replace ageing water and sanitary pipelines. The project, expected to begin after Republic Day, will take several months and is seen as critical before the road’s planned redevelopment.
Officials said the existing pipelines, laid nearly 40 years ago, have corroded over time, causing frequent leaks and contamination complaints from businesses along the stretch. The replacement aims to modernize the network and ensure reliable service for the next 40 years, including connections to military and police facilities.
The scope of work covers both sides of MG Road between Brigade Road and Trinity Circle. Towards Anil Kumble Circle, only one side will be excavated, as the opposite stretch has little commercial activity. BWSSB will require about 10 feet of road space on each side, effectively taking up one full lane, which is expected to disrupt traffic throughout the construction period.

The pipeline project is closely tied to the Bengaluru Central City Corporation’s ₹45‑crore white‑topping plan for the 2.2‑km stretch. BWSSB must complete its work before the road surface upgrade begins. Shantinagar MLA N. A. Harris has urged that the work start only after New Year and Republic Day events to minimize disruption.
At a recent review meeting chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Tushar Girinath, officials also discussed alternatives to white‑topping. Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) was suggested as a faster‑to‑lay and longer‑lasting option.
With the pipeline replacement now prioritized, MG Road is poised for a major transformation, combining infrastructure renewal with surface upgrades to improve durability and ease of maintenance for decades to come.
