  • Closed since June 15, 2019 for metro work
  • Better traffic flow expected in CBD

After being shut since June 2019 due to Pink Line metro construction, Kamaraj Road between Cubbon Road and MG Road is fully open to traffic from January 2, promising smoother connectivity in central Bengaluru.

A key road in the heart of Bengaluru has reopened after a long wait of six years, bringing major relief to commuters and businesses in the central business district.
Kamaraj Road, which connects Cubbon Road with MG Road near the Cauvery Emporium junction, has been fully opened to traffic following the completion of the underground MG Road Metro station on the upcoming Pink Line. The road had remained closed since June 15, 2019, due to metro construction works carried out by BMRCL.

The stretch between Cubbon Road and MG Road is now operational in both directions from January 2. While the western side of the road was opened earlier on June 14, 2024, the eastern portion has now been cleared for traffic, marking the full restoration of the route.

The rebuilt road measures 214 metres in length and has a minimum width of 11 metres on both carriageways. Officials expect the reopening to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the surrounding areas and improve travel time for commuters moving between Commercial Street, Brigade Road, Cubbon Road and MG Road.

Kamraj Road plays a crucial role as it links Cubbon Road directly to MG Road’s Cauvery Emporium junction. As part of the metro project, an underground interchange is being developed at MG Road to connect the existing Purple Line with the future Pink Line. To facilitate this complex construction, work on Kamraj Road had begun as early as 2018.

Initially, the metro authorities had planned to complete the project by around 2023. However, construction challenges and delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the timeline further. In February 2025, partial movement was allowed on one section of the road, before the full reopening this month.

The total cost of the Kamaraj Road reconstruction is estimated at ₹3 crore, and all civil works are now complete. With the road back in use, commuters are expected to benefit from smoother traffic flow and shorter travel times in one of Bengaluru’s busiest commercial zones.
