  • First jail visit after DGP appointment
  • 15-day deadline to stop irregularities
  • Staff shortage and inmate concerns flagged

On his first visit after taking charge as DG of Prisons, Alok Kumar conducted a detailed inspection of Parappana Agrahara Jail, interacted with inmates and visitors, reviewed facilities, and warned of strict action if illegal activities continue.

Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Jail came under close scrutiny on Tuesday as Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services) Alok Kumar conducted an extensive inspection of the facility. This was his first visit to the jail after assuming charge as the DGP of the department.

The inspection began at the jail check post, where Alok Kumar gathered details from on-duty staff and closely observed security arrangements. He later walked around the jail premises with senior officers, reviewing both the outer and inner areas. During the visit, he strongly instructed officials to ensure proper vehicle parking and questioned why available jail land was not cleaned and put to effective use.

More than 50 officers accompanied him during the rounds, including DIG Divya, DCP Narayan, IPS officer Anshukumar, Commander Viresh Kumar, Assistant Commander Madesh, and other senior officials. The DGP inspected multiple sections of the prison, including male and female barracks, the kitchen, bakery, hospital, and other operational areas.

Alok Kumar also visited the barrack housing murder accused Darshan and questioned him regarding his case. Officials said the accused did not raise any complaints and that six inmates housed in the barrack were found to be living comfortably.

During his interaction with prison authorities, the DGP was informed that nearly 40 percent of warden posts remain vacant, making it challenging to manage around 4,700 inmates. While acknowledging the difficulty, Alok Kumar made it clear that staffing shortages cannot be used as an excuse for lapses.

At the visitors’ check post, he personally interacted with people who had come to meet inmates, asking them about the cases involved and whom they were visiting. In one instance, he questioned a visitor wearing a thick gold chain, checked it himself, and gathered details before allowing him to proceed.

After completing the inspection, Alok Kumar addressed the media, stating that he had reviewed both internal and external arrangements of the jail and listened to grievances raised by inmates and officials. He announced a 15-day window to address irregularities, warning that strict action would follow if unlawful activities continue.

He emphasized that change cannot happen overnight but assured that corrective measures would begin immediately following this visit.
