Bengaluru doctors caution residents as colder mornings over the next few days could increase blood pressure and heart attack risk, especially among the elderly and children.
Is there a connection between winter and heart attacks? Doctors in Bengaluru say yes, and they are urging citizens to be extra cautious during the cold season.
Medical experts point out that heart attack cases tend to increase during winter, particularly in December and January. According to doctors, there is a 10 to 15 per cent rise in heart-related emergencies during this period. The risk is higher during early morning hours, especially between 3 am and 8 am, when cold conditions are more intense.
Over the next four days, Bengaluru is expected to experience increased cold during early mornings. Doctors explain that exposure to low temperatures can cause a rise in blood pressure. Cold weather also leads to narrowing of blood vessels, which can slow blood flow and increase the chances of blood clot formation. These factors together significantly raise the risk of heart attacks.

Children and senior citizens are particularly vulnerable during this season. Doctors have advised families to take special care of the elderly and young children, ensuring they stay warm and avoid sudden exposure to cold.
Another major concern during winter is reduced physical activity. Doctors note that people tend to move less, skip regular exercise, and follow unhealthy routines during colder months. This sedentary lifestyle further contributes to heart-related problems. In addition, consumption of oily and fried foods during winter can negatively impact heart health.
Doctors have also highlighted the role of air pollution in worsening heart conditions. Poor air quality during winter months can have a direct and harmful effect on the cardiovascular system.

To reduce risk, doctors recommend avoiding early morning walks during winter. Instead, evening walks are considered safer. They also advise people to avoid oily foods, follow a healthy diet, stay active, and maintain an overall healthy lifestyle throughout the season.
