Residents lash out at the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) after its ‘awareness campaign’ of dumping trash outside homes of litterers backfires, with citizens blaming poor waste pickup schedules.

A storm of public anger erupted in Bengaluru after the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) launched its so-called ‘awareness campaign’, dumping garbage outside the houses of people caught littering on public roads.

While officials claimed it was a bold move to curb the city’s roadside garbage menace, citizens hit back sharply on social media, accusing the civic body of hypocrisy and failure to manage waste collection effectively.

Residents questioned, “If the garbage trucks don’t come on time, are we supposed to dump our waste in front of the GBA office?” Many complained that garbage vehicles visit some areas barely once a week, leaving them with no option but to discard waste nearby.

Several citizens demanded that the GBA and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) focus on timely garbage collection, fixed pickup timings, and proper dustbins in public places, instead of shaming residents.

“People working from morning to evening can’t wait for garbage trucks that show up whenever they want,” said a resident from Basaveshwaranagar. Others pointed out that dead-end houses are often skipped by garbage trucks, leading to waste buildup.

Social media users also urged the civic body to treat all neighbourhoods equally, rather than focusing on only a few visible localities for publicity campaigns.
