Dwelling units with more than two floors will soon have to keep at least two separate waste-collection bins within their premises, according to Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao. The announcement was made during the East corporation public meeting held on Tuesday.

The meeting saw participation from more than 200 residents who gathered at the corporation office to voice their grievances. Among various civic issues raised, garbage collection and waste management emerged as the most common concerns. Several residents complained that rubbish collection vehicles were irregular and often failed to arrive on time.

Responding to the concerns, Maheshwar Rao directed the health officer to treat waste management as a serious public health matter. He instructed officials to draft a regulation making it compulsory for all buildings with more than two floors to maintain two waste bins, one for wet waste and another for dry waste.

The proposed rule will also apply to paying guest (PG) accommodations operating in multi-storey buildings. “Our vehicles will collect waste from the bins regularly,” Rao assured residents during the meeting.

The objective behind the move is to ensure proper segregation of garbage at the source and streamline collection. Authorities believe that having designated bins within premises will reduce roadside dumping and improve overall waste handling.

However, it is not yet clear whether the proposed regulation will be implemented across all city corporations or will initially apply only to the East corporation limits.

Officials are expected to provide further clarity once the regulation is formally drafted and notified.
