With Women’s Day approaching, demand for the iconic Mysore Silk saree has surged sharply in Bengaluru. A remarkable scene unfolded in Jayanagar, where women began lining up as early as 4 AM outside a store to purchase the much-loved saree.

The rush was witnessed at the prestigious Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) showroom in Jayanagar. Though the store opens only at 10:30 AM, women gathered in the early hours fearing that stocks might run out quickly.

Not just residents of Bengaluru, but women from towns like Sirsi, Sira and Challakere, as well as from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur, travelled to Jayanagar to buy the sarees. The growing demand is linked to Women’s Day celebrations, with many women planning to gift themselves or their loved ones a Mysore Silk saree.

Due to the overwhelming turnout, the store staff introduced a token system to manage the crowd. However, anxiety over limited availability led to intense competition among customers. Reports of pushing and arguments were seen as women tried to secure tokens to ensure they did not miss out.

Currently, only 45 Mysore Silk sarees are available at the store, while more than 100 women were waiting outside for tokens. Because of the limited stock, strict rules have been enforced, one token allows the purchase of only one saree.

It is also important to note that Mysore Silk sarees are not available at the KSIC store every day. Distribution takes place only on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The price range of the sarees starts from ₹26,000 and goes up to an impressive ₹3 lakh, depending on the design and craftsmanship.
