Dhoni's 79-ball 91 won him the Man of the Match award

Gambhir has claimed that he was distracted by Dhoni

The world cup victory serves as a source of inspiration

It was exactly on this day (April 2nd) in the year 2011 that India managed to win the International Cricket Council (ICC) One Day International (ODI) Cricket World Cup (CWC) after a span of 28 years in home conditions. The words “Dhoni finishes off in style” coming from commentator Ravi Shastri is permanently etched in the hearts of all Indian fans. Former Indian captain had promoted himself up the order as a surprise in the final in order to maintain the left right combination. His 79-ball 91 won him the Man of the Match award. He smacked a full length delivery by Sri Lankan bowler Nuwan Kulasekara over long-on with India needing 4 runs to win from 11 balls to send millions of Indians into a state of ecstasy.

Subsequently the world cup victory has been marked by controversy owing to many factions claiming that they have not been given due credit for the achievement. Most notable among them was former Indian opener Gautham Gambhir who scored a 122-ball 97 when wickets were falling in regular intervals at the other end. Gambhir has also claimed that he was distracted by Dhoni who reminded him that he was nearing the 100-run mark resulting in a lapse of concentration ending up with him being bowled out.

Despite these controversies, the world cup victory serves as a source of inspiration and hope for all generations who are in anticipation of a similar achievement from the present squad.
