Congress to file PIL to recover Rs 4600 crore from BJP for Income Tax violations after receiving notice of Rs 1823 crore from IT Department

The Indian National Congress (INC) has faced another setback ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Election as they have been served a notice of Rs 1823 crore by the Income Tax (IT) Department for assessments for the year 2017-18 and 2020-21. This has been termed as tax terrorism by the General Secretary in-charge Communications for the INC Jairam Ramesh. In a press conference addressed by Jairam Ramesh and the Treasurer of the INC Ajay Maken, concerns pertaining to the lack of a level playing field in the lead up to the elections were raised. “They have raised a demand of ₹53 crore alone from 1993-94 when Sitaram Kesri was the President. Going by the fines that the Income Tax department for so-called violations, the BJP should then pay a penalty of ₹4,600 crore,” Ajay Makenn said. 

The INC leaders assured that they will fight this battle in the courts as well as on the streets. A hearing in this regard is due on April 1st in the Supreme Court. They however stressed on the fact they do not seek the support of any international organisation in their struggle. They also promised that a PILwill be filed to recover Rs 4600 crore from the BJP.
