The Karnataka High Court has extended interim relief to Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh in a case alleging that he hurt religious sentiments by mocking a sacred daiva tradition. The court directed police not to take any coercive action against him until March 9, continuing its earlier order issued on February 24.

Singh had approached the High Court seeking to quash criminal proceedings initiated after a private complaint was filed by advocate Prashanth Methal. The complaint alleged that Singh’s actions at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa last year—where he mimicked divine expressions associated with Panjurli/Guliga Daiva while addressing Kannada actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty—amounted to disrespecting a sacred tradition.

Following the complaint, the First Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court directed the High Grounds police to register an FIR against Singh. In response, the actor petitioned the High Court to dismiss the case.

During Monday’s hearing, Senior Advocate Sajan Poovayya, representing Singh, informed the court that the state government had not yet filed its objections, while the complainant had already submitted his. Additional State Public Prosecutor B N Jagadeesh stated that the government’s objections were ready and requested time to file them. The court allowed the request, directing the ASPP to file objections within two days and listing the matter for hearing next Monday.

Justice M Nagaprasanna ordered that the interim relief granted earlier would continue until the next hearing. The case has drawn attention as it involves the intersection of artistic expression and religious sensitivities, with Singh’s legal team seeking to have the FIR quashed while the complainant insists on pursuing charges.
