KERC marks first decrease in rates in over fifteen years

The revised tariffs effective immediately from April 1

Intricate slab system for commercial connections eliminated

Karnataka has implemented a significant reduction in electricity tariffs, bringing relief to residents and businesses across the state. This move, initiated by the Karnataka State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC), marks the first decrease in rates in over fifteen years. Effective immediately from April 1, the revised tariffs aim to alleviate financial strain on consumers and bolster economic growth.

For households consuming over 100 units, the tariff has been slashed to Rs. 5.90 per unit, down from the previous Rs. 7.00 per unit. Similarly, for those using less than 100 units, the tariff will see a modest increase from Rs. 4.75 to Rs. 5.90 per unit. However, it’s noteworthy that 97 percent of consumers in this category are already covered by the Gruha Jyoti Yojana, mitigating the impact of the price adjustment for them.

Commercial users, including establishments like hospitals and educational institutes, will also benefit from the revised rates. Previously set at Rs. 7.75 per unit, these entities will now pay Rs. 7.25 per unit, offering much-needed relief to businesses.

Furthermore, the intricate slab system for demand-based charging in commercial connections has been eliminated, streamlining the tariff structure and easing the financial burden on commercial users. The previous rate of Rs. 8.50 per unit has been reduced to Rs. 8, providing additional support to businesses.
