  • Chicken prices near ₹300 per kg
  • Egg rates jumped from ₹6 to ₹8
  • Festive demand driving price rise

Following a sharp rise in egg prices, chicken rates across Karnataka have jumped suddenly, with prices touching ₹290 per kg in retail markets and expected to cross ₹300 by the end of December, says the Poultry Association.

Consumers across Karnataka are feeling the heat as chicken prices have surged sharply, closely following the recent hike in egg prices. Retail markets are already witnessing chicken rates nearing the ₹300 mark, raising concerns among buyers ahead of the festive season.

At present, chicken prices have touched up to ₹290 per kg in several markets. In retail outlets, chicken with skin is being sold at around ₹270 per kg, while skinless chicken is priced between ₹280 and ₹290 per kg. Traders warn that prices are likely to climb further in the coming days.

The spike comes after egg prices rose sharply from ₹6 to ₹8 per egg since the beginning of December. Poultry traders attribute the rise in egg prices to increased demand for Christmas cake preparation and a surge in egg exports to foreign countries, which has tightened local supply.

Alongside eggs, live chicken prices have also increased, currently ranging between ₹160 and ₹180 per kg in today’s retail markets. Chicken meat prices are now being sold at ₹270, ₹280 and ₹290 per kg, depending on the cut and location.

Industry representatives point out that Christmas and New Year demand has significantly boosted consumption. In addition, severe cold weather has led to an increase in the number of people opting for non-vegetarian food, adding further pressure on supply.

Another key factor is the impact of bird flu last year, which disrupted poultry production and continues to affect supply levels. Traders say that supply is not keeping pace with demand, leading to the current price surge.

According to Nagaraj, President of the Karnataka Poultry Association, chicken prices are expected to cross the ₹300 per kg mark by the end of December, and there is a possibility of further price escalation in January as demand remains strong.
