New premarital counselling centres aim to guide young couples on expectations, communication, and shared responsibilities before marriage.
With divorce cases steadily increasing across Karnataka, the state government has approved the creation of specialised premarital counselling centres called ‘Koodi Baalona’. The initiative, led by the Women and Child Development Department, aims to help young adults understand marriage better before entering it.

The new centres will offer structured counselling for individuals preparing for marriage as well as couples about to tie the knot. Officials believe that many marital disputes begin due to unrealistic expectations, lack of communication, and limited awareness about emotional, financial and social responsibilities. The counselling programme seeks to address these gaps early.
Through these centres, young men and women will be guided on the purpose of marriage, mutual expectations, emotional bonding, financial understanding, and gender equality. Sessions will also focus on navigating disagreements, building healthy communication and understanding each other’s personal values. The goal is to help couples enter marriage with clarity and confidence, reducing avoidable conflicts later.

The Karnataka State Women’s Commission had earlier recommended setting up such centres, citing models already used in other states. The National Commission for Women is currently running similar facilities under the name ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, which have shown positive results.
Taking these examples into account, Karnataka has now cleared the proposal to roll out ‘Koodi Baalona’ counselling centres across the state. Authorities expect the initiative to support stronger relationships and play a key role in reducing divorces in the long run.
