Karnataka plans dedicated Computer Science curriculum for all KPS schools

State to introduce Computer Science from Class 1 in 2026-27; new teacher cadre and curriculum to be developed with top tech institutions.

In a major step toward modernising public education, Karnataka is preparing to introduce a full-fledged Computer Science curriculum across all Karnataka Public Schools (KPS). The School Education Department has drawn up a plan to roll out the subject from the 2026-27 academic year, starting with students in Class 1.

At present, government schools do not have specialised Computer Science teachers or dedicated textbooks. To bridge this gap, the department is drafting a new cadre exclusively for Computer Science educators within KPS institutions. The proposed qualification criteria include degrees such as BSc in Computer Science, BCA, Information Science, or equivalent Computer Science-based programmes. Candidates will also be required to have studied Kannada and must clear the official Kannada proficiency certification.

As part of the larger initiative, the department is collaborating with leading technology institutions to design a strong curriculum framework. Discussions with IIT Bombay are expected in the coming week, followed by consultations with IIT Madras. These engagements will focus on academic structure, learning outcomes and practical integration suited for students from early grades.

The move aligns with the state’s vision to transform all KPS schools into integrated model institutions equipped with essential learning facilities and modern academic resources under a single umbrella.
