Karnataka raises maize procurement limit from 20 to 50 quintals per farmer

State government revises maize purchase cap, giving major relief to small and medium farmers

In a major decision benefiting maize-growing farmers, the Karnataka government has revised the maximum procurement limit from 20 quintals to 50 quintals per farmer. The amendment order was issued on December 2, 2025, marking a significant shift in support for growers facing market distress.

The decision was approved under the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, with special intervention from Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy. Earlier, farmers were allowed to sell only 20 quintals per farmer at the fixed support price of ₹2,400 per quintal, calculated at 12 quintals per acre. Farmers had strongly opposed the cap and had met the Chief Minister seeking an upward revision.

Responding to these appeals, the government has now permitted the sale of up to 50 quintals, allowing small and medium farmers to offload a larger share of their harvest at the guaranteed support price. The revised limit will be determined strictly based on landholding details available in the FRUITS digital platform.

The order further states that procurement through PACS (Primary Agricultural Credit Societies) located near distilleries will be given priority. All PACS, along with taluk and district-level officials, have been instructed to implement the new limit without delay.

In addition to this, KMF has opened five maize procurement centres across the state, Gubbi, Shikaripura, Dharwad, Hassan, and Rajanukunte in Bengaluru. Farmers must register through the Agriculture Department, e-Governance, or NIC portals before selling their produce. Registered growers will receive procurement schedules via SMS.

Farmer groups have welcomed the revision, calling it a timely step that will protect growers from distress sales and ensure stable income during a difficult market phase.
