From January 1, 2026, eligible women employees of Karnataka’s four state transport corporations can avail one day of menstrual leave every month, following formal approval by the Transport Department.
In a significant welfare move for women employees, the Karnataka Transport Department has approved the introduction of menstrual leave for women staff working across the state’s four transport corporations. The decision applies to KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC, offering relief to thousands of women employees, including drivers and conductors.
The order has been formally issued by KSRTC Managing Director Akram Pasha, confirming that the policy will come into effect from January 1, 2026. Under this decision, women employees will be entitled to one day of menstrual leave every month, subject to specific conditions.

The move follows earlier Government of Karnataka orders, which aimed to improve the mental well-being and work comfort of women government employees by providing a monthly menstrual leave facility. The transport corporations have now officially adopted this government policy and implemented it within their organisational framework.
As per the order, women employees aged between 18 and 52 years, who are in active service and experience menstrual cycles, are eligible to avail this leave. The leave can be sanctioned by the same competent authority that approves casual leave. Importantly, no medical certificate is required to apply for menstrual leave.
The order clearly states that menstrual leave must be recorded separately in leave and attendance registers. It cannot be combined with any other type of leave. The benefit must be used within the same month and cannot be carried forward to subsequent months.

With this decision, Karnataka’s transport sector joins the growing list of public institutions adopting women-centric workplace policies, marking a notable administrative step towards employee welfare within state-run services.
