Shivakumar made a "business deal with the voters"

Shivakumar rebuffed the allegations stating his intent was right

The Election Commission has initiated legal proceedings against Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar following allegations of breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the Lok Sabha elections. The action comes in response to a complaint lodged by BJP MLA Ashwath Narayan, who accused Shivakumar of engaging in what he termed a “business deal with the voters.”

The complaint alleged that Shivakumar promised voters water supply in exchange for support for the Congress party, which led to the lodging of a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for “bribery” and “undue influence at elections,” as confirmed by the state’s Chief Electoral Officer.

In his defense, Shivakumar rebuffed the allegations, stating that his intent was to assure the public that the Congress government was committed to resolving their concerns. He asserted, “We are there to solve the problems… It is our duty, we are doing it.”

This is not the first instance where the BJP has taken issue with Shivakumar’s conduct. Earlier, the party filed a separate complaint alleging that Shivakumar made “false and unsubstantiated” claims about its involvement in the downfall of a “Vokkaliga Chief Minister,” referring to former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy.

The BJP’s complaint accused Shivakumar of violating the Model Code of Conduct by stirring up false allegations based on caste and communal sentiments, particularly targeting the Vokkaliga community.
