India to vote in a 7-phase LS election
China may disrupt polls using AI
Issue has been flagged by Microsoft
Even as India gets ready to vote in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the threat of China using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to manipulate elections, has been flagged by Microsoft.
The tech giant’s Threat Intelligence analysis warns of China’s intent, citing a trial run during Taiwan’s presidential poll.
Not just India
The report underscores that state-backed cyber groups, supported by North Korea, may target elections in the US, South Korea, and India. China’s tactic involves creating and amplifying AI-generated content to sway outcomes, though the immediate impact is deemed low.
However, the evolving sophistication of AI-generated memes, videos, and audio raises concerns about future effectiveness. Notably, a Chinese cyber actor known as Flax Typhoon, targeting India and other nations, was identified. In previous instances, Chinese state-linked hacker groups allegedly breached Indian government offices and businesses, including sensitive immigration data.
Moreover, Storm-1376, a Chinese Communist Party-linked actor, disseminated AI-generated videos accusing the US and India of fueling unrest in Myanmar, amidst its ongoing civil strife since the 2021 military coup.
It may be recalled that Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates recently engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on AI’s implications and the threat posed by deepfake content.
These revelations highlight growing apprehensions surrounding China’s AI-enabled interference in global geopolitics, particularly in the context of democratic processes like elections.
