Delhi blast: NIA likely to take over probe as police detain four suspects

The Delhi Police have detained four suspects in connection with the Delhi car explosion that killed nine and injured more than 20. The Centre is likely to transfer the case to the NIA under the UAPA for a detailed, multi-agency investigation.

Delhi Police have intensified investigations into the Delhi car blast that killed nine and injured over 20. Four suspects are now in custody as the probe may soon be handed over to the NIA.

The investigation into the deadly car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort has intensified, with the Delhi Police detaining four suspects linked to the incident. The explosion, which occurred on Monday evening near Metro Gate No. 1, claimed nine lives and left over 20 others injured.

Officials said multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Delhi Police Special Cell, National Investigation Agency (NIA), and Jammu and Kashmir Police, are working together to trace the origin of the explosives and identify those behind the attack.

Following the blast, Delhi Police conducted extensive raids across Paharganj, Daryaganj, and nearby areas through the night. Several hotels and lodges frequently used by short-term visitors were searched. Authorities have already detained four suspects for questioning as part of the ongoing probe.

Case registered under UAPA

The case has been registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), reflecting the seriousness of the incident. According to senior officials, the Central Government is likely to transfer the investigation to the NIA, which will lead the case with assistance from Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir Police. The NIA is expected to conduct a comprehensive probe into the source of the improvised explosive device (IED) and any potential terror links.

The blast, suspected to have been caused by a high-intensity improvised explosive device (IED) placed inside a parked Hyundai i20 car, left the area near the Red Fort in chaos. Emergency teams rushed to the spot, and injured victims were moved to nearby hospitals for treatment. More than 20 people continue to receive medical care, some in critical condition.

Security tightened across capital

Security has been strengthened across the national capital following the explosion. Sniffer dogs, bomb squads, and forensic teams are continuing to collect evidence from the site and analyze CCTV footage for leads.

The Delhi Police Commissioner has directed all units to remain on alert while the NIA prepares to take full charge of the investigation.
