Ola, Uber, and Rapido drivers will strike nationwide on Feb 7 for six hours, demanding fair fares, regulation, and worker protections

App-based transport services across India are set to face major disruption on February 7, as drivers and delivery partners of Ola, Uber, and Rapido prepare to participate in a nationwide strike. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) has called for the protest, with several other organizations across the country pledging support.

According to the announcement, workers will switch off their apps for about six hours, leading to significant impact on cab, autorickshaw, and bike taxi services. The strike is part of the “All India Strike,” aimed at pressing for long-standing demands including the introduction of minimum fares, restrictions on commercial services offered by private vehicles, and compensation mechanisms to address what workers describe as continuous exploitation by platform companies.

TGPWU issued a statement on its official X account, emphasizing that gig workers have been struggling with low earnings, rising fuel costs, and lack of social security. The union argued that app-based platforms have failed to provide fair working conditions, leaving drivers with little choice but to resort to collective action.

In Bengaluru, the Gig Workers Association has extended its support to the strike, signaling widespread participation in the city. Commuters are likely to face difficulties during the protest hours, with reduced availability of app-based transport options.

The strike highlights growing unrest among gig and platform workers, who have been demanding regulatory intervention to ensure fair wages and better protections. With app-based mobility services forming a crucial part of urban transport, the protest is expected to draw attention from policymakers and the public alike.

As the February 7 strike approaches, commuters across India may need to plan alternative travel arrangements, while the workers hope their collective action will push companies and regulators to address their concerns.
