OpenAI to open first office in India; CEO Sam Altman confirms - Check the city inside

With India emerging as its second-largest user base, OpenAI will set up its first local office in New Delhi, aiming to deepen AI adoption and expand access with affordable plans.

OpenAI is making a big bet on India. CEO Sam Altman revealed in a post on X that the company will launch its first office in New Delhi later this year, cementing India’s role as one of the most important markets for artificial intelligence.

Altman said India’s AI adoption has been “amazing to watch,” with ChatGPT usage in the country growing fourfold in the past year. To make its tools more accessible, OpenAI also rolled out its cheapest monthly plan yet—priced at $4.60— tailored for India’s nearly one billion internet users.

“India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—extraordinary tech talent, a thriving developer ecosystem, and strong government backing through the IndiaAI Mission. Opening our first office is just the beginning of building AI for India, and with India,” Altman noted in his statement.

The Union Minister for IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, welcomed the move, calling it a recognition of India’s growing strength in digital innovation. “With our digital infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-ready ecosystem, India is poised to lead the next AI revolution,” he said.

While the exact location of the New Delhi office is yet to be announced, OpenAI has already registered as a legal entity in India and begun hiring. However, competition in the market is fierce, with Google’s Gemini and Perplexity AI aggressively pushing their services, often with free advanced features for Indian users.
