India joins elite nations manufacturing homegrown telecom equipment as BSNL launches 4G network and 97,500 towers, boosting Digital India and rural connectivity.
In a landmark step for India’s telecom sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated BSNL’s indigenously developed 4G stack on Saturday, placing India among a select group of nations manufacturing its own telecom equipment.

Coinciding with the silver jubilee of BSNL, the PM also commissioned more than 97,500 mobile towers, including 92,600 4G sites, built at a cost of around Rs 37,000 crore using homegrown technology. The cloud-based network is future-ready, allowing a seamless transition to 5G, keeping India alongside countries like Denmark, Sweden, South Korea, and China in homegrown telecom innovation.
Officials highlighted that the rollout will benefit over 26,700 unconnected villages, including 2,472 in Odisha, providing digital access to more than 20 lakh new subscribers in remote, border, and left-wing extremism-affected regions. The towers are solar-powered, forming India’s largest cluster of green telecom sites.

In addition, Modi launched the 100 per cent 4G saturation project under the Digital Bharat Nidhi, covering approximately 29,000-30,000 villages in a mission-mode initiative, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and empowering rural areas under the Digital India mission.
