A bright December Cold Moon, which is also the third and last supermoon of 2025, will be visible across the world through Tuesday night.
A spectacular night sky awaits observers on December 4 as the Cold Moon, known for appearing during the onset of winter, rises prominently in the evening. This event is not just another full moon; it also marks the third and final supermoon of 2025, making it one of the most anticipated celestial sights of the year.
The Cold Moon traditionally signals the arrival of colder weather and long winter nights, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. Its appearance this year coincides with the moon reaching perigee, the closest point in its orbit to Earth. When a full moon occurs near perigee, it appears slightly larger and brighter, a phenomenon widely known as a supermoon. Although supermoons occur three to four times each year, each event differs depending on the exact distance and phase alignment.
Tonight’s moonrise begins in the afternoon across the United Kingdom, with timings recorded at 14:52 GMT in London, 14:29 in Edinburgh, 14:52 in Belfast, and 15:05 in Cardiff. In India, the moon will become visible as evening approaches and will shine throughout the night. The moon is expected to set between 8 am and 9 am the following morning, giving viewers a full night of clear visibility.
One of the most striking features tonight will be the celestial arrangement around the rising moon. The Cold Moon will form a beautiful triangular pattern with the Pleiades star cluster and the bright star Aldebaran. Additionally, Jupiter will appear nearby, adding to the night’s brilliance. The famous winter constellation Orion the Hunter will also be clearly visible, enhancing the seasonal sky experience.
Weather conditions, however, may vary. Much of the UK is expected to face cloudy skies and rainfall through Thursday. Northern and eastern parts of Scotland and eastern England may see extended cloud cover into the evening. As the night progresses, several regions are predicted to experience clearer skies, offering better viewing opportunities later in the night.
