  • QR code-based Aadhaar verification to launch by end-2025
  • Aadhaar app to allow online updates of name, address, DOB
  • Biometric updates will still require enrolment centre visits

From November 2025, Aadhaar holders can verify their identity digitally using QR codes and update personal details via a revamped Aadhaar app, making the process paperless and hassle-free.

In a major digital leap, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to roll out a nationwide QR code-enabled e-Aadhaar system by the end of 2025, making identity verification completely paperless. This transformative step will allow over one billion Aadhaar holders to authenticate their identity digitally without carrying physical copies of their Aadhaar card.

UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar revealed that nearly 2,000 of the one lakh Aadhaar authentication devices across India have already been upgraded to support the QR-based verification system. Once fully implemented, individuals and service providers will be able to complete identity checks simply by scanning a QR code, eliminating the need for photocopies or manual verification.

In addition to the QR system, UIDAI is set to launch a revamped Aadhaar mobile app that will allow users to update key personal details, including name, address, and date of birth, directly through their smartphones. This update will reduce reliance on enrolment centres, as only biometric-related updates (fingerprint and iris scans) will require in-person visits starting November 2025.

The e-Aadhaar system will be directly integrated with key government databases, including birth and death registries, PAN cards, passports, driving licences, ration cards, MNREGA records, and even electricity bills, to make verification faster and prevent identity fraud. The QR-based verification has already undergone pilot testing at sub-registrar offices and in the hospitality sector to ensure secure and smooth operations.

To keep Aadhaar data accurate, UIDAI is also collaborating with educational boards like CBSE to conduct biometric enrolment drives for children aged 5–7 and 15–17 years, making sure their biometric data remains current.

Experts believe this move will mark a turning point in India’s digital governance journey, cutting red tape, reducing fraud, and putting control of identity data back in citizens’ hands, with strict privacy safeguards ensuring that personal information is shared only with consent.
