Syed Mustafa Kamal, a member of Pakistan’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) party, has drawn attention to the stark contrast between the developmental achievements of India and the pressing challenges faced by Karachi, Pakistan’s economic hub. Addressing the National Assembly, Kamal lamented the tragic incidents of children falling into open gutters in Karachi while India celebrates milestones like its recent lunar mission.

Highlighting Karachi’s pivotal role as Pakistan’s “revenue engine,” Kamal emphasized the city’s significance as a gateway to the nation, Central Asia, and Afghanistan. However, he rued the neglect of basic infrastructure, such as access to fresh water, exacerbating issues like water scarcity and exploitation by the water tanker mafia.

Furthermore, Kamal shed light on Pakistan’s education crisis, with a staggering 26.2 million children out of school, posing a threat to the country’s economic development. He underscored the prevalence of “ghost schools” in Sindh and alarming statistics of children denied access to education, particularly in Balochistan and among the poorest demographics.
Amid these challenges, Pakistan grapples with economic difficulties, including high inflation and mounting debt. Delays in implementing IMF programs have strained foreign reserves, exacerbating economic instability, as reported by the World Bank.
Kamal’s remarks underscore the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to address Karachi’s infrastructure woes and Pakistan’s education crisis, amidst broader economic challenges.
