Prajwal Revanna in the dock over sleazy videos

    Videos have compromised victims' dignity

We can't miss the politics behind the entire act

The alleged sexcapades of Prajwal Revanna, the JD(S) MP from Hassan, Karnataka are abominable.

As an elected representative, he should not have resorted to such sleazy acts, bringing down the dignity of his office and family.

However, after issuing this caveat, let’s talk about the politics behind it.

First things first. The release of the sleazy videos in the public domain is in itself reprehensible. Two: These sleazy videos were released just days before the first phase of the Karnataka polls.

So this makes the timing of the release suspect. If the ones who released the video were genuinely concerned about the victims, they should have filed a complaint with the police and not resorted to public shaming of Prajwal Revanna.

Three: Now, in the process of defaming Prajwal Revanna, they have compromised on the privacy of the victims. As the videos traipse into the memory of private cellphones, it is the women and their families that have been jeopardised.

This morning, when former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy spoke to the media, he pointed fingers at deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, saying it was he who got the videos released. At the same time, Devarajegowda, the BJP leader, who wrote a letter to Amit Shah on the issue last December blamed the car driver of Prajwal Revanna, Karthik, who is allegedly said to have released the videos on DKS’ directions.

On his part, DK Shivakumar washed his hands of the issue, saying he would never stoop to such levels to score brownie points based on women’s dignity.

It is said the videos were recorded 4-5 years ago. Legally speaking, the dates of the videos should not have an impact on the trial of the accused. He can still be prosecuted. But the timing still remains suspect.

Also, earlier in the day, the Union Home Minister, while he was in Assam, questioned the Congress government why it had not conducted any probe even though it knew of the act.

Lastly, on social media, stills of CM Siddaramaiah with Prajwal several years ago, are floating. Netizens have questioned the silence of Siddaramaiah for all these years and suddenly latching on to it during these elections.

Now, as the argy-bargies continue, the man, in the centre of the entire controversy, Prajwal Revanna, has fled the country! God knows how he will be repatriated, but the politics over the issue continues!

The ruling Congress in Karnataka has a lot to answer!
