India secures hosting rights for the centenary Commonwealth Games, marking its first major global sports event since the 2010 Delhi edition.
Ahmedabad has officially secured the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a major moment for India in the global sports arena. This will be the country’s first large-scale international sporting event since the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi.
The confirmation came during the Commonwealth Games General Assembly in Glasgow, where representatives from 74 member nations and territories voted in favour of India’s bid. The approval positions Ahmedabad as the centrepiece of the centenary edition of the Games, which were first held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada.

India’s proposal showcased Ahmedabad, known both as Ahmedabad and Amdavad, as a city that blends modern infrastructure with strong cultural identity. The bid emphasised the city’s readiness to deliver a memorable 100-year edition built on the foundation laid by Glasgow 2026. The plan also highlighted India’s growing sports ecosystem, youthful energy, and ambition to strengthen its global sporting footprint.
As per reports, the Commonwealth Games Federation acknowledged India’s capabilities and vision for the milestone event. The 2030 edition is expected to celebrate a century of the Commonwealth sporting movement while also setting new benchmarks for the years ahead. The event aims to bring together athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of unity and progress.
