Tamil Nadu and Karnataka plan new airports near Bengaluru, aiming for 2033. Both states also push tech growth with major initiatives

Tamil Nadu has initiated formal steps to establish a major international airport in Hosur, submitting a site proposal to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The project, located in Shoolagiri taluk between Berigai and Bagalur, is designed to accommodate up to 30 million passengers annually.

State officials caution that approvals may take time, citing the Parandur airport’s year-long wait for basic clearance. Given Hosur’s proximity to Bengaluru, airspace coordination is a key consideration, and technical assessments have been shared with the Centre to address safety concerns.

Meanwhile, Karnataka is advancing its own plans for a second international airport to serve Bengaluru. At the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2025, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar confirmed that the government is evaluating a site in South Bengaluru. Previously identified locations include Kaggalipura and Harohalli on Kanakapura Road, and another on Kunigal Road.

With regulations barring new international airports within 150 km of Kempegowda International Airport until 2033, officials are laying groundwork early to target completion around that year. They estimate such infrastructure projects typically require five to six years.

The Tech Summit also spotlighted Karnataka’s ambitions in the technology sector. The state unveiled a Space Technology Policy for 2025–2030, aiming to capture half of India’s space market. Plans for an AI city near Bidadi and enhanced support for global firms and NRIs were also announced. Karnataka continues to lead in software exports and startup activity, with over 16,000 startups currently operating in the state.

As both states pursue major transport and tech initiatives, the competition to build new airports reflects a broader push for regional growth. These developments are poised to reshape connectivity and business dynamics across southern India.
