Nearly 1.6 lakh cars registered in the current financial year

The number of private vehicles on Bengaluru’s roads has surged dramatically, with a 340% increase reported this year. According to reported data from the Transport Department, approximately 6.37 lakh new private cars and two-wheelers were registered in the city between April 2023 and March 2024, compared to 4.37 lakh in the corresponding period last year (April 2022 to March 2023).

While the registration of new two-wheelers saw a 19% increase this year, the rise in new private cars on the city’s roads is staggering. In 2022-23, just over 36,000 cars were registered, whereas this figure soared to nearly 1.6 lakh in the current financial year.

The overall number of non-transport vehicles, encompassing two-wheelers, cars, omnibuses, tractors, private service vehicles, etc., has also experienced a significant surge of almost 45%. Consequently, in the past 12 months, Bengaluru has witnessed the addition of over 7.25 lakh vehicles (both transport and non-transport) to its roads.

As of March 31, 2024, the city’s vehicular population exceeds 1.16 crore, with private two-wheelers and cars accounting for nearly 88% of this total.

Experts warn that this surge in vehicles negatively impacts the quality of life for Bengalureans. A high volume of vehicles not only leads to traffic congestion but also contributes to increased emissions and declining air quality.
