Party questions lapses and accountability after 39 lives lost; Vijay announces compensation for victims’ families

Barely 24 hours after the tragedy, TVK has moved the Madras High Court, filing an urgent motion seeking an independent inquiry into the stampede. The party claims there may have been “deliberate conspiracies” behind the breakdown of crowd control, pointing to lapses that went beyond mere mismanagement.

In an unusual move, the HC has agreed to urgently hear the matter despite the ongoing Puja holidays, with the case likely to be taken up on Monday. Party sources say this decision could shape not only TVK’s credibility but also the larger debate on how political rallies are managed in Tamil Nadu.

Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin has already announced a commission of inquiry headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan, which will visit Karur to begin its probe. Yet, TVK argues that an internal government commission will not suffice, insisting on a neutral, independent body to restore public confidence.

This demand is significant given that only weeks ago, the Madras HC had warned TVK about rally accountability, asking Vijay to set an example in crowd management. Ironically, the court had even raised the scenario of a stampede, a tragic prediction that has now become reality.

In an emotional gesture, Vijay and TVK have announced ₹20 lakh compensation for each bereaved family and ₹2 lakh for the injured. While this financial aid has been welcomed, questions remain: Could the tragedy have been prevented? Were safety protocols ignored in the rush to showcase political power?
